Sweets aren’t what they used to be!

So having survived the most recent sugar season, my mind drifts back to fillings of the past and this is when I realise that nothing is sacred and as language changes so does the world of confectionary.

Examples, I hear you cry! Well the issue is that I am of an age that very few of you can calculate, so my experience of back in the day is really, back in the day! My first delicacy has to be ‘sugar mice’, two words that certainly still exist but is it still possible to purchase the exquisite smooth rodents which were made entirely from sugar? I think not.

Next are those favourites which for some unknown reason had to change their perfectly acceptable names. The prime example, of course, is the unexplainable rebrand of “Marathon“ as “Snickers”. This I believe had something to do with the US market but I am unsure. Similarly, “Opal Fruits”changed their name to “Starbursts” and although the name sounds more appealing I think that the change lost the juicy sweets their popularity. Some chocolate treats have managed to keep two names, depending on where you live, the most well known has to be ”Twix” or should I say “Raider”. Others try to stick to their origins even though there is push back. That well known luxury from the blue and yellow store, was originally “Dajm” in Swedish and “Dime” in British English but a middle ground has been found after several decades and we both stick to ”Daim”.

Other sweets have just disappeared for no reason, except their surgery content in a health conscious society. I am talking about “Spangles” and “Pacers“ to name but a few. Names that will slowly be lost over time.

It seems that language death also applies in the world of sweets. Is nothing sacred?
